The research behind practising pétanque alone
What the research supports, what it only hints at, and where I stop.
Some of this guide comes from what I’ve learned on the pétanque terrain. Some of it comes from research. They are not quite the same thing.
There isn’t much research on pétanque itself, so to understand practice better I’ve also looked at sports and tasks that ask similar questions, including golf, darts, target shooting and free throws.
That doesn’t mean a study in golf tells us exactly what will happen in pétanque. But it can help us understand one part of the problem. The important thing is knowing what is useful, what might carry across, and where we should stop.
How do we know practice became learning?
Performance during practice, retention, transfer, spacing.

Looking good in practice doesn’t mean it will still be there later.

What I take from itEighty-four beginners practised the same basketball shot, but in different ways. One group stayed at one distance at a time. Others had more variation. The group doing the most repetitive practice looked the best while they were practising. Three days later, when everyone was asked to shoot from a distance they had not practised, that advantage had gone. The groups that had experienced more variation adapted better. That is the bit that matters to me. A session can feel like it is going brilliantly because you have settled into the distance, the line and the problem in front of you. That doesn’t necessarily tell you what you will still have when you come back, or when the shot changes.
Where I stopThis isn’t an argument against repetition. Repetition can help you find and understand something. It is simply a reminder not to judge the learning by how good the last few boules of a session looked. Find something, change the problem, come back later and see what is still there.

What I take from itA systematic review of spaced training. Its trials point one way on not cramming, and are flat across which particular schedule you choose. The bit I find useful is the shape of that result: coming back to something after a gap asks more of the learning than doing all the work in one sitting.
Where I stopNothing here is about pétanque, and no trial in it names a best number of hours or days between sessions. So I won’t give you a schedule. The exact spacing is yours to explore.

Better players were more likely to practise with a specific goal and a plan.

What I take from itForty-three teenage basketball players practising free throws. The better group set more specific goals, chose technique-focused strategies, and put a miss down to a particular part of the technique rather than to luck or ability. That is the habit the journal pages are trying to build.
Where I stopA difference between groups doesn’t show what caused it, so I wouldn’t turn their habits into a formula. Starting with a clear question and ending with an explanation you can act on are simply good habits to borrow.
What is repetition actually good for?
Use repetition to stay with one problem long enough to understand it. Then ask a little more of it: change something, come back later, and see what survives.

What I take from itA review of skill learning built around one distinction: how practice is going and what is being learned are not the same measurement. Repeating a problem gives you time to notice the line, the weight, the release, adjust and try again — which is exactly how I use repetition when exploring my release, keeping the distance and shot similar so the feedback stays readable. The review’s point is what comes next: improvement across those repetitions doesn’t yet tell you what will still be there tomorrow, at another distance, when the picture changes.
Where I stopA broad review can’t say how many boules to repeat before changing something. That number isn’t in any paper. You find it on the terrain, by changing something and seeing whether what you found comes with you.

Practising several distances helped when the throw was later tested somewhere new.

What I take from itDarts, which makes the question unusually close to ours. One group completed all seventy-five practice throws from the same distance; two others spread the same number across three or five distances. A day later, back at the original distance, there was no significant difference between them. Asked to throw from a new, longer distance, the groups that had experienced different distances were more accurate. Repetition had not somehow failed — the difference appeared when the question changed. That is very close to what the guide asks of you: stay with a shot long enough to learn something from it, then change the distance and see whether you can find the solution again.
Where I stopDarts, not boules, and distance is only one of the ways a pétanque problem can change. Nothing here tells you to change the distance after every throw — only that being comfortable with the problem you practised and solving a new one are different tests.

What I take from itA registered study, its analysis fixed before the data arrived. One group repeatedly practised the aiming target they would later be tested on; another practised that target plus four more. Tested on the original target a day later, the varied group had learned it no better. If you are trying to understand one particular shot, landing spot or feeling, keeping the problem stable for a while needs no apology — sometimes repetition is what makes the feedback clear enough to learn from.
Where I stopA virtual aiming task, and the test went back to a target everyone had practised, so this says nothing about adapting to a genuinely new situation. It only stops anyone claiming that added variation always wins.

What I take from itA review of practice order: mixing different tasks from attempt to attempt, against practising one in a block before moving on. Across the research as a whole, mixing helped retention — but in real sporting settings the benefit was almost negligible, and the transfer effect was small and statistically uncertain. Staying at seven metres, learning something, then moving to eight is one kind of change. Jumping between seven, nine, six and ten from boule to boule is a different one, and the evidence for it on a terrain is much thinner than the textbooks suggest.
Where I stopThis is about the order of practice, not about whether to change the problem at all. I don’t take it as a reason to randomise every boule. Stay with it, understand it, change something, see what survives.
When should practice get harder?
Challenge point, changing one constraint, keeping feedback readable.

What I take from itTwo reviews that meet in the same place. One treats difficulty as functional rather than fixed: what you tell yourself, the order of the boules, how much feedback you get and what is riding on the throw all move it, so the same task can be made harder or easier by arrangement. The other finds that what helps simple laboratory tasks often fails on complex skills, and sometimes reverses.
Where I stopNeither paper can place the right level of difficulty for you. There is no line where eight metres is useful and nine is too much, because difficulty depends on the player and on much more than distance. The guide’s test is more honest: make it harder only while you can still understand what the boule is telling you.

Good practice keeps coming back to the same three things.

What I take from itEricsson’s purposeful practice asks for a specific goal, full attention, feedback and work at the edge. Csíkszentmihályi’s flow research names clear goals, immediate feedback and a challenge matched to skill as what most predicts absorption. Three of the four line up, reached from two different directions — which is why the guide treats attention as something that follows once the other three are set.
Where I stopNeither book proves that arranging a session this way causes better learning, and there is no state called flow you need to chase. Treat the three as ingredients, not rules.
How much should practice look like a match?
Representative practice, changing pictures, decision making and transfer.

A drill doesn’t have to copy a match. It does need to keep the part of the match you want to practise.

What I take from itPinder and colleagues argue that a drill should preserve the information a player actually uses and the choices actually available, not merely look like the game. Measured that way, a training hour imitates a match poorly: taekwondo athletes sparring in training and again in competition felt less pressure, worked less hard mentally, and moved differently.
Where I stopNobody has measured how closely a pétanque drill must copy a match before it transfers, and I don’t think every boule needs pressure or a score attached. Keep the part that matters — the reading, the choice, the one attempt — and let the rest of the match stay at home.

A match keeps changing, so some practice should let the solution change too.

What I take from itBjørndal and O’Sullivan’s 2026 conceptual analysis argues that skilled performance is not the reproduction of one stored movement: players keep reorganising their actions around the task, the environment and the information available — Bernstein’s “repetition without repetition”.
Where I stopA conceptual paper about handball, not evidence that varied pétanque practice beats repetition. I use it as a way of thinking about what comes after you have explored something, not as a reason to change every shot.
What do attention, routine and gaze add?
Quiet eye, routines, holistic cues and where attention settles.

A routine can help. There is little evidence that it needs to be complicated.

What I take from itA meta-analysis of well over a hundred effects, including bowling, golf and air pistol. Neither routine type nor player standard changed the picture, and elaborate routines did no better than simple ones. That is why the guide asks you to have a path through the questions rather than a particular ritual.
Where I stopNo boules sport appears in the review, many of its studies are small, and the evidence under pressure is thinner. So no promise that a routine wins games, and no reason to copy anyone else’s. A familiar path from read to throw is the whole idea.

Disrupting the stability of the final look hurt accuracy, with nothing else changed.

What I take from itTwo pre-registered experiments on a far-aiming task, with open data. Players held the final fixation with nothing left to look at, and unsteadying the gaze hurt accuracy while the view stayed identical. Stillness is what was manipulated, so stillness is what I take from it.
Where I stopBeginners, a virtual task, and nothing here says staring for longer makes you more accurate. I take no stopwatch from it — just some value in letting the eyes settle once the decision is made.

Better performers hold a longer last look, and the better attempts come with one too.
What I take from itThe quiet-eye meta-analysis, across aiming sports. Skilled performers held a clearly longer final gaze than less skilled ones, and within the same player, successful attempts came with a longer final gaze than misses. The association is real, and it is not small.
Where I stopAn association is not a mechanism, and nothing here hands you a duration to copy — in the one pétanque study below, the quiet eye moved with the picture and predicted nothing. What the longer look means is still open. My reading sits further down, with the other things I can’t prove.

In pétanque, the arrangement of the boules moved the quiet eye. It did not predict whether the shot went in.
Direct pétanque evidence
Selva, Sundar & Arifudeen (2023), Malaysian Journal of Sport Science and Recreation 19(2), 364–372
What I take from itEight Malaysian pétanque athletes, eye-tracked on a terrain, shooting at a single boule and at a double-boule arrangement across five distances. The harder arrangement changed quiet eye duration. This is the closest thing to sport-specific gaze evidence that exists.
Where I stopEight players in one session can’t show that a longer quiet eye causes better shooting — here it didn’t predict success at all. So no chasing gaze duration as a technique. The question stays simple: have I finished reading the shot, and are my eyes settled on what matters?

One meaningful cue can sometimes be more useful than thinking about several body parts.

What I take from itWork on holistic process goals: a cue aimed at the general feeling of a movement rather than one component of it. The examples in that literature are the same ones a player already reaches for — smooth for a putt, soft for a shot. In the putting study, practice performance was similar across conditions while the holistic group came out ahead at retention and transfer.
Where I stopThis doesn’t show that any particular word improves a throw, or that a movement can be stored inside a cue. The right word isn’t the one from a study — it’s the one that holds the feel of your whole action together.
Where I go beyond the research
Slow practice, my reading of settled eyes, and the places this guide goes past what has been tested. I say so openly, because that is what keeps the rest believable.

What I take from itLee and Genovese built discrete and continuous versions of one timing task and varied the rest between attempts. On the discrete version — the class a single throw belongs to — short rests between attempts did no harm and in places helped.
Where I stopA laboratory timing task, and nothing about days between sessions. I wouldn’t prescribe seconds between boules from it. Take the time to read what happened — the learning will not leak away while you do.

That settled eyes may be a symptom of a decision already made, rather than a technique to produce.
My interpretation
What I take from itThis is my reading of what I have noticed on the terrain: a settled mind has no questions left to answer, so attention is easier to direct. It fits the pétanque study above, where gaze changed with the difficulty of the picture rather than predicting success, and it would also explain why better players hold a longer last look. Consistent is not the same as proven.
Where I stopNo study has shown that finishing a decision is what settles the eyes in pétanque. That part is mine. I use it as a question — if my eyes are still searching, have I actually decided? — not as a mechanism.

Slowing a movement down to notice more is a coaching idea with a good pedigree, not a research finding.

What I take from itDaniel Coyle’s The Little Book of Talent gives it as Tip 26, describing super-slow practice as a magnifying glass for sensing errors. He is a journalist synthesising practice across many domains, and the image is his.
Where I stopA coaching idea, not evidence that half-speed throwing produces better learning. That is why the drill never asks you to keep the slow movement: slow is for noticing, and the question that matters is asked back at your normal rhythm.
